ARTIST'S CATALOGUE STATEMENT for CELEBRATING the MASTER Exhibition
The bygone object is purely mythological in its reference to the past. It no longer has any practical importance, but exists in order to signify. It has quite a specific function in the framework of system: it signifies time (Baudrillard 1990).
Do I mean that any object of human manufacture whatsoever can be circulated as an artwork? Potentially, perhaps yes, but what is interesting about Duchamp's objects was never the objects themselves, but Duchamp's reasons for selecting them (Gell 1996).
My work is about relationships between people and objects, particularly the point where as the object breaks and/or is discarded so passes from possession to artifact and human presence signified by its absence (Ray Hearn, Framed Gallery, Darwin, 2001).
